How to Drag and Drop Files Between iPad Apps
Master multitasking on iPadOS. Learn to move text, images, and documents between apps using the native drag and drop gesture.
- Prepare your workspace. Open the source application containing the content you wish to move. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold briefly to open the Dock, then drag a second application onto the screen to enter Split View or Slide Over mode.
- Initiate the grab. Tap and hold the item—text, image, or file—until it appears to lift slightly from the background. Keep your finger pressed on the screen to maintain the grab.
- Drag to the destination. Without lifting your finger, drag the item across the screen toward the second application. You will see the item move beneath your fingertip as you navigate the interface.
- Drop the selection. Position the item over the target window or text field. Lift your finger from the screen to release the item and drop it into the new location.
- Close the workspace. Once the transfer is complete, tap the multitasking divider at the top of the screen to close the secondary app. Drag the divider to the far edge of the screen to return to a single-app view.
