How to Transfer Everything to a New iPad

Transfer all apps, data, and settings to your new iPad using iCloud or Quick Start. Follow this step-by-step guide for a seamless migration.

  1. Update your current iPad. Ensure your current iPad is running the latest version of iPadOS. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install any pending updates to ensure compatibility with your new device.
  2. Perform a manual iCloud backup. On your current iPad, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Tap Back Up Now to ensure all current data is captured in the cloud.
  3. Prepare the new iPad. Power on your new iPad and place it next to your old device. If the new device is already set up, you must erase it by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Utilize Quick Start. Wait for the Quick Start screen to appear on your old iPad. Tap Continue, then scan the animation displayed on your new iPad with your old device’s camera.
  5. Enter security credentials. When prompted, enter your old iPad’s passcode on the new device. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up Face ID or Touch ID, then sign in with your Apple ID password.
  6. Initiate data restoration. Select Transfer from iPad to migrate data directly between devices, or select Download from iCloud to pull your most recent backup. Your new iPad will begin downloading apps and media in the background.
