How to Restore an iPad from an iCloud Backup

Learn how to restore your iPad to its previous state using an iCloud backup. Follow these exact steps to recover your data securely.

  1. Factory reset the iPad. To restore from a backup, the iPad must be in a fresh state. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings to return the device to the initial setup screen.
  2. Begin the setup process. Power on the iPad and swipe up or press the Home button to reach the 'Hello' screen. Select your language and region, then join a stable Wi-Fi network to proceed with the activation.
  3. Sign in with Apple ID. Follow the on-screen prompts until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Select Restore from iCloud Backup and sign in using the Apple ID and password associated with the backup.
  4. Choose the backup file. A list of available backups will appear. Select the specific backup you wish to restore by reviewing the date and size of each file to ensure you select the correct version.
  5. Wait for the restoration process. The iPad will begin downloading your settings, apps, and data from the cloud. Keep the device connected to the internet and power throughout this process, as disconnecting will pause the transfer.
  6. Complete initial configuration. Once the progress bar completes, follow any remaining on-screen instructions for Face ID, Touch ID, and Apple Pay setup. Your iPad will continue to download media and app content in the background.
