How to Back Up Your iPad Before Moving to a New Device

Learn how to perform a full iCloud or computer backup of your iPad to ensure your data and settings transfer seamlessly to your new device.

  1. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network. Open Settings and select Wi-Fi. Ensure you are connected to a stable, private network to prevent interruption during the backup process.
  2. Navigate to iCloud settings. Tap your name at the top of the Settings sidebar. Select iCloud, then tap iCloud Backup.
  3. Initiate the manual backup. Ensure the toggle for Back Up This iPad is set to On. Tap Back Up Now and remain on the screen until the progress bar completes.
  4. Prepare for a local computer backup. Connect your iPad to a Mac running macOS Catalina or later using the provided cable. Open Finder and select your iPad from the sidebar under Locations.
  5. Enable local backup encryption. In the General tab, select Encrypt local backup. Create a password you can easily recall; this ensures Health and Activity data are included in the backup.
  6. Execute the computer backup. Select Back Up Now within the General tab. Wait for the sync icon to finish spinning in the sidebar before disconnecting your device.
