How to Reset an iPad to Factory Settings
Erase your iPad and restore it to factory settings. Complete step-by-step guide for all iPad models.
- Back up your iPad data. Open Settings and tap your Apple ID name at the top. Select iCloud, then tap iCloud Backup. Toggle iCloud Backup on if it is not already enabled, then tap Back Up Now. Wait for the backup to complete before proceeding.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and power. Ensure your iPad is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Plug your iPad into power or place it on a wireless charger. The reset process requires both connectivity and sufficient battery to complete without interruption.
- Open Settings and navigate to General. Tap Settings on your Home Screen. Scroll down and tap General. This menu contains system-level options including reset functions.
- Find the Reset option. In General settings, scroll to the bottom of the screen. Tap Transfer or Reset. This option appears near the bottom of the General menu on all iPad models.
- Select Erase All Content and Settings. Tap Erase All Content and Settings. A warning dialog will appear explaining that this action cannot be undone. Read the message carefully before proceeding.
- Enter your Apple ID credentials. When prompted, enter your Apple ID email address and password. This protects your iPad from unauthorized erasure and activates Activation Lock. If you do not have your Apple ID password, you will not be able to proceed.
- Confirm the final erase action. Review the final confirmation message. Tap Erase to begin the factory reset. Your iPad will restart and begin erasing all data, settings, and content.
- Wait for the reset to complete. Your iPad will display a progress bar and restart multiple times during the erasure process. Keep the device plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. When complete, you will see the Setup Assistant screen with the Hello animation.
