How to Fix iPad Touchscreen Not Responding

Fix unresponsive iPad touchscreen with proven troubleshooting steps. Force restart, check for physical damage, and restore system settings.

  1. Clean the screen and remove obstructions. Power off your iPad and clean the screen with a microfiber cloth. Remove any screen protectors, cases, or accessories that might interfere with touch sensitivity. Check for cracks, water damage, or debris around the screen edges.
  2. Force restart your iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and Power button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. For iPad Pro models without a Home button, quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Power button until restart.
  3. Test touchscreen responsiveness. Open the Notes app and try drawing with your finger across different areas of the screen. Test multi-touch by pinching to zoom in Photos. Check if the issue affects specific screen regions or all touch input.
  4. Close problematic apps. Double-tap the Home button to view app switcher, then swipe up on any frozen or problematic apps to close them. For Face ID iPads, swipe up from the bottom and pause to access the app switcher.
  5. Update iPadOS to the latest version. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. Connect to Wi-Fi and ensure your iPad has at least 50% battery charge before starting the update process.
  6. Reset all settings. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode when prompted. This preserves your data but resets system preferences, network settings, and accessibility options to defaults.
  7. Restore iPad from backup or as new device. If touchscreen issues persist, connect to iTunes or Finder and restore your iPad. Choose to restore from a recent backup made before the problem started, or set up as a new device to eliminate software conflicts completely.
