How to Fix an iPad Stuck on the Apple Logo

Learn the precise steps to force restart and restore an iPad that is unresponsive or frozen on the Apple logo screen.

  1. Perform a forced restart. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the top power button until the Apple logo disappears and reappears, then release.
  2. Connect iPad to a computer. Connect your iPad to a Mac running macOS Catalina or later using a USB cable. Open Finder. If using a Windows PC or an older macOS, open iTunes.
  3. Enter Recovery Mode. With the iPad still connected, perform the force restart sequence from Step 1. Do not release the buttons when the Apple logo appears; hold until the 'Connect to Computer' screen displays on the iPad.
  4. Attempt to update the firmware. On your computer, a prompt will appear asking to Update or Restore. Select 'Update' to reinstall iPadOS without erasing your data. Allow the download to complete and the software to install.
  5. Restore to factory settings. If the update fails, repeat Step 3 and choose 'Restore' in the computer prompt. This wipes the device and installs a fresh copy of iPadOS. Use your iCloud or computer backup to restore data after setup.
