How to Fix a Slow-Charging iPad

Resolve slow charging speeds on your iPad by following these diagnostic steps for hardware and software optimization.

  1. Inspect the charging port for debris. Power off the iPad completely. Use a bright light to examine the USB-C or Lightning port for lint, dust, or metal particles that prevent full contact with the cable. Gently remove any obstruction using a thin wooden toothpick, being careful not to bend the internal pins.
  2. Verify power adapter and cable compatibility. Ensure you are using an Apple-certified power adapter with a minimum output of 20W. Lower-wattage adapters or non-MFi certified cables significantly throttle charging speeds. Test with a known-functional cable and power brick to rule out a damaged accessory.
  3. Check device temperature. If the iPad feels warm to the touch, the system will intentionally throttle or pause charging to protect the battery. Move the device to a cooler environment and away from direct sunlight. Charging will resume at normal speeds once internal temperatures stabilize.
  4. Force restart the iPad. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest the top button, press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button, then press and hold the top button. Release only when the Apple logo appears. This clears temporary power management glitches that may slow charge input.
  5. Disable Optimized Battery Charging. Navigate to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Toggle off Optimized Battery Charging temporarily to force the device to charge at maximum capacity without the software-imposed delay. Remember to re-enable this feature after testing to maintain long-term battery health.
  6. Update to the latest iPadOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Install any available updates, as Apple frequently releases firmware patches that optimize power management protocols. A pending update can sometimes cause background system processes to consume power faster than the charger can replenish it.
