How to Customize Modifier Keys on iPad

Learn to remap Caps Lock, Control, Option, and Command keys on your iPad to optimize your physical keyboard workflow.

  1. Connect your physical keyboard. Ensure your keyboard is connected to the iPad via the Smart Connector or Bluetooth. Settings for modifier keys are only visible when a physical keyboard is actively recognized by the system.
  2. Access keyboard settings. Open the Settings app. Navigate to General, then select Keyboard, and tap on Hardware Keyboards to view options specific to your external input device.
  3. Select Modifier Keys. Tap the Modifier Keys button at the bottom of the Hardware Keyboards menu. This screen displays a list of mappable keys, including Caps Lock, Control, Option, and Command.
  4. Assign new functions. Select a key from the list to change its behavior. Choose a new modifier function from the provided list, or select No Action to disable the key entirely.
  5. Test your changes. Return to the Home screen and test the keys in a text field or app. The changes take effect immediately without requiring a system restart.
