How to Customize External Display Settings on iPad

Learn to configure resolution, brightness, and display arrangement for external monitors connected to your iPad via USB-C or Thunderbolt.

  1. Connect the display hardware. Plug your display cable into the USB-C or Thunderbolt port on your iPad. Ensure the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input source. The iPad screen will immediately be detected by the external display.
  2. Open Display settings. Open the Settings app on your iPad. Tap Display & Brightness in the left sidebar to reveal the external display management tools.
  3. Arrange your display layout. Tap the Arrangement button. Drag the blue representation of your external monitor to match its physical position relative to your iPad. This ensures your cursor moves naturally between screens.
  4. Toggle Extended Display mode. Ensure the Mirror Display toggle is turned off to use the monitor as an extended desktop. With this off, you can drag app windows between the iPad and the external screen.
  5. Adjust resolution and scale. Select your external display from the menu. Adjust the slider to set the desired resolution and text scaling. Use the higher resolution settings to maximize workspace area.
