How to Configure and Manage VPN Settings on Android

Learn to safely configure, connect, and manage VPN settings on your Android device to ensure encrypted network traffic and improved online privacy.

  1. Access the VPN network settings menu. Open the Settings app on your Android device. Navigate to Network & internet, then tap on VPN. If the option is not visible, tap on the search bar at the top of Settings and type VPN to jump directly to the configuration menu.
  2. Create a manual VPN profile. Tap the plus (+) icon to add a new VPN profile. Enter a descriptive name, select the VPN type provided by your service, and input the server address. Fill in the required authentication fields, such as username and password, provided by your network administrator or service provider.
  3. Activate the Always-on VPN feature. Tap the gear icon next to your saved VPN connection. Toggle the switch for Always-on VPN to ON. This setting ensures that your device automatically reconnects to the VPN if the connection drops, preventing data leaks.
  4. Enable the block connections without VPN toggle. Within the same settings menu, locate the Block connections without VPN option. Toggle this to ON to establish a kill switch. This prevents the device from sending any data packets if the VPN connection is not active.
  5. Confirm the secure connection status. Slide down from the top of your screen to open the Notification shade. Look for the key icon or the VPN status indicator showing an active, encrypted connection. You can tap this notification to view session duration and data statistics.
