How to Secure Your Android Device with a Stronger Screen Lock

Enhance your Android device security by upgrading from a weak PIN or pattern to a robust alphanumeric password. Step-by-step instructions for Android 15.

  1. Access your system security settings. Open the Settings app on your Android device. Scroll down and tap on the Security & privacy menu. This section contains all authentication and encryption configurations.
  2. Navigate to device unlock options. Tap Device unlock within the Security & privacy menu. Select Screen lock to view your current protection method and available alternatives.
  3. Choose the strong password option. Select Password from the list of security methods. Avoid choosing PIN or Pattern, as these are significantly less secure than a full alphanumeric password.
  4. Create a unique, complex password. Enter a password that contains a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Ensure the password is at least eight characters long and not reused from other online accounts.
  5. Verify your new credentials. Re-enter the new password exactly as you typed it when prompted. Tap Confirm to save the changes and apply the new security policy to your device.
  6. Review lock screen notification settings. After setting the password, the system will prompt you to choose how notifications appear on your locked screen. Select Show sensitive content only when unlocked to ensure privacy.
