How to Scan a QR Code on Android

Scan QR codes on Android using your camera app or Google Lens. Works on any Android phone without extra apps.

  1. Open the Camera app. On your Android home screen, tap the Camera app icon. If you don't see it, swipe up to access your apps drawer and search for Camera.
  2. Point your camera at the QR code. Hold your phone steady and aim the rear camera at the QR code. Keep the code centered in the viewfinder and make sure it is well-lit. Your phone will automatically detect the QR code within a few seconds.
  3. Tap the notification that appears. When your camera detects the QR code, a notification banner will appear at the top or bottom of your screen showing a preview of the scanned content. Tap this banner to open the link or action.
  4. View the scanned result. Your browser or default app will open and display the content linked to the QR code. This could be a website, contact information, WiFi credentials, or another type of data stored in the code.
  5. Use Google Lens as an alternative method. Open Google Photos or Google Lens app, select an image or point your camera at a QR code, and tap the Lens icon at the bottom. Google Lens will scan the code and show results. This method works even if your camera app does not support QR scanning.
  6. Troubleshoot if QR code won't scan. If your camera app does not recognize the QR code, check that your phone's camera is clean and unobstructed. Ensure the QR code is not damaged or faded. Try adjusting the lighting or moving closer to the code. Some older Android phones may require a third-party QR scanner app from the Google Play Store.
