How to Restore WhatsApp Messages on Android

Follow this guide to restore your WhatsApp chat history and media from a Google Drive backup on your Android device.

  1. Reinstall WhatsApp. Uninstall WhatsApp from your Android device. Open the Google Play Store, search for WhatsApp, and select Install to ensure you are using the most current version of the application.
  2. Verify your phone number. Open WhatsApp and accept the Terms of Service. Enter the exact phone number associated with your previous account and tap Next to receive your six-digit verification code.
  3. Grant backup permissions. Once verified, WhatsApp will request permission to access your contacts and Google Drive backups. Tap Continue to authorize these permissions and allow the app to scan for existing cloud backups.
  4. Initiate data restoration. When the app detects your backup, tap the Restore button on the screen. Do not close the application or interrupt the connection while the progress bar completes the data transfer.
  5. Complete the setup. Tap Next once the restoration finishes to see your chat history. WhatsApp will continue to download media files in the background after the initial messages are restored.
