Preparing Your Samsung Phone for Smart Switch Migration

Ensure a seamless data transfer with Samsung Smart Switch. Follow these essential preparation steps to sync your Android or iOS device successfully.

1. Update system software. Navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install on both the source and target devices. Ensure both phones run the latest version of their respective operating systems to maintain compatibility. Restart both devices once updates are installed.
2. Verify storage space. Go to Settings > Device care > Storage to ensure the target device has more free space than the total size of the data stored on your old device. Delete unnecessary files, large videos, or unused applications to provide enough headroom for the transfer.
3. Create a cloud backup. Perform a manual backup of your current device to Google Drive or iCloud before starting the migration. For Android, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. This serves as a fail-safe should the cable connection drop during the process.
4. Sign into your Samsung account. On the target Samsung device, navigate to Settings > Samsung account and sign in with your credentials. Maintaining an active session allows the device to properly decrypt and integrate synced data like Samsung Notes, Passwords, and Calendar entries.
5. Deactivate security settings. Temporarily disable advanced security features on the source device that may block the transfer, such as Secure Folder or encrypted third-party messaging backups. On iOS devices, ensure that your device is unlocked and the trust prompt is accepted when connecting the cable.
6. Open the Smart Switch application. Launch the Smart Switch app on both phones. If the app is not installed, download it from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store on the target device. Keep both devices side-by-side and connected to power throughout the duration of the transfer.
