How to Transfer Contacts to a New Android Device
A direct guide to syncing and transferring your contact list to a new Android smartphone using Google account synchronization.
- Confirm Contact Sync on the source device. Open the Settings app on your old phone and navigate to Passwords & accounts. Tap your Google account, select Account sync, and ensure the toggle for Contacts is set to On. Initiate a manual sync by tapping the three-dot menu icon and selecting Sync now.
- Sign in to your new device. Power on your new device and proceed through the initial setup wizard. When prompted, enter the exact Google account credentials used on your previous phone. The device will automatically establish a connection to your Google Cloud profile.
- Enable contact synchronization. Once on the home screen, open Settings and tap Passwords & accounts. Select your Google account and verify that Contacts is active under the Sync status menu. Allow the device to download the contact data from the server in the background.
- Confirm data arrival. Open the Contacts app on the new phone. Tap the menu icon or your profile icon and select Contacts settings to confirm the account displayed matches your Google account. All synced contacts will appear in the main directory shortly.
- Manage duplicate entries. If duplicates appear, navigate to the Fix & manage tab within the Contacts app. Select Merge & fix to identify and consolidate overlapping contact information. This utility automatically scans and optimizes your contact list integrity.
