How to Manage Android Notification Channels

Take control of your Android alerts by customizing individual notification channels for specific apps. Reduce clutter and prioritize essential updates.

  1. Open the App Info menu. Locate the app icon on your home screen or in the app drawer. Long-press the icon and select the 'App info' (i) icon from the context menu.
  2. Locate the Notifications settings. Once inside the App info screen, tap on 'Notifications'. This panel displays the global notification status for the app and lists available categories.
  3. Identify individual notification categories. Scroll down to the 'Notification categories' section. You will see a list of specific channels defined by the developer, such as 'Direct Messages', 'Promotions', or 'Downloads'.
  4. Customize channel behavior. Tap the text label—not the toggle—of a specific category to enter its detailed settings. From here, you can set the notification to 'Alerting' or 'Silent', change the sound, or toggle 'Pop on screen' for high-priority alerts.
  5. Exit and verify settings. Press the back button repeatedly to return to the home screen. Your changes are applied instantly, and the system will honor these preferences for all future notifications from this channel.
