How to Change Default Apps on Android

Learn how to change your default browser, phone, and messaging apps on Android to customize your user experience.

  1. Open the system settings. Unlock your device and locate the Settings app icon. Tap to open the main configuration menu for your operating system.
  2. Access the Apps menu. Scroll down the list and tap on 'Apps'. On some devices, this may be labeled as 'Apps & notifications' or 'Application manager'.
  3. Select Default apps. Look for the 'Default apps' option. You may need to tap on 'See all apps' or a 'General' sub-menu to locate this setting if it is not immediately visible.
  4. Assign specific categories. Tap the category you wish to change, such as 'Browser app', 'Phone app', or 'SMS app'. A list of compatible installed applications will appear.
  5. Set your preference. Tap the radio button or the app name from the provided list to designate it as the new default. Your selection will take effect immediately.
