How to change the default digital assistant on Android

Learn how to switch your default digital assistant app on Android to Google, Alexa, or other compatible services with these quick steps.

  1. Open system settings. Unlock your device and locate the Settings app icon. Tap the gear icon to open the main configuration menu for your Android OS.
  2. Access Apps menu. Scroll down the list and tap on Apps. Depending on your device manufacturer, you may need to select See all apps or Manage apps to proceed.
  3. Locate default app settings. Select the Default apps option. You may need to tap an Advanced or Additional settings dropdown to reveal this selection.
  4. Choose digital assistant. Tap on Digital assistant app. This menu displays your currently selected service and allows for modification.
  5. Select your preferred assistant. Tap the Default digital assistant entry again to view the list of installed applications that support assistant functionality. Select your preferred app from the list.
  6. Accept the system prompt. A system confirmation dialog will appear warning you that the new assistant may collect information. Tap OK to finalize the switch.
