How to Change Android Navigation Controls

Switch between gesture navigation and the classic three-button layout on your Android device with this step-by-step guide.

  1. Access the System Settings. Open the Settings app from your home screen or app drawer. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select System.
  2. Locate Gestures menu. Within the System menu, tap on Gestures. This screen contains all interface-related input configurations for your device.
  3. Choose Navigation mode. Tap on System navigation. You will see options for Gesture navigation and 3-button navigation. If your device supports it, 2-button navigation may also appear as an option.
  4. Apply the preferred setting. Select the radio button next to your desired navigation style. The device interface will update immediately to reflect the change.
  5. Fine-tune gesture sensitivity. If you selected Gesture navigation, tap the gear icon next to the selection. Adjust the Back gesture sensitivity slider to determine how far from the edge of the screen a swipe triggers the back action.
