How to Set Up a New Android Phone

Complete guide to setting up your new Android phone from initial boot to essential apps. Configure accounts, security, and key settings in minutes.

  1. Power on and select language. Hold the power button until the Android logo appears. Select your language from the list and tap the arrow to continue. Choose your region when prompted to set appropriate time zones and regional settings.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi network. Select your Wi-Fi network from the available networks list. Enter your password and tap Connect. Wait for the connection confirmation before proceeding to the next screen.
  3. Sign in to your Google account. Tap 'Sign in' and enter your Gmail address and password. If you don't have a Google account, tap 'Create account' and follow the prompts. Accept Google's terms of service and privacy policy to continue.
  4. Set up screen lock security. Choose your preferred screen lock method: PIN, pattern, password, or biometric. For fingerprint setup, place your finger on the sensor multiple times until the scan is complete. For face unlock, hold the phone 8-12 inches from your face and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Restore or set up as new. Select 'Restore from backup' if you have a previous Android phone or cloud backup. Choose your backup source and select which data to restore. If setting up fresh, tap 'Set up as new device' and skip to Google services configuration.
  6. Configure Google services. Review and toggle Google services like location history, ad personalization, and backup settings. Enable 'Find My Device' for theft protection. Accept or decline Google Pay setup—you can configure this later in Settings > Google > Google Pay.
  7. Install essential apps. Open Google Play Store and install your must-have apps. Download messaging apps, banking apps, and productivity tools you use daily. Sign in to each app using your existing accounts or create new ones as needed.
