How to Set Up Android Auto

Complete guide to setting up Android Auto in your car. Connect your phone, enable developer options, and start using apps safely while driving.

1. Download and install Android Auto. Open Google Play Store on your Android phone. Search for "Android Auto" and tap Install. The app requires Android 6.0 or higher and works with phones that have at least 4GB of storage available.
2. Enable developer options on your phone. Go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number seven times until you see "You are now a developer." Return to Settings, tap System > Developer options, then enable Unknown sources to allow Android Auto installation.
3. Connect your phone to your car. Start your car and ensure the infotainment system is on. Connect your phone using a USB cable to the designated Android Auto port — usually marked with a phone icon. Your car should automatically detect the connection and prompt you to set up Android Auto.
4. Complete the setup process. Follow the on-screen prompts in your car to grant Android Auto necessary permissions including location, microphone, and phone access. Accept the terms of service and choose whether to enable Google Assistant for voice commands.
5. Configure app preferences. Open Android Auto on your phone and tap the hamburger menu > Settings. Select which apps appear on your car display under "Apps for Android Auto." Enable or disable notifications, set up message reading preferences, and configure driving mode settings.
6. Set up wireless Android Auto (if supported). If your car supports wireless Android Auto, go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and pair with your car. Open Android Auto settings and tap "Wireless projection." Select your car from the list and follow prompts to establish the wireless connection.
