How to Factory Reset an Android Device Safely

Follow this step-by-step guide to securely wipe your data and perform a factory reset on any Android device before selling or recycling it.

  1. Back up your data. Open Settings, tap Google, then select Backup. Tap Back up now to sync your contacts, photos, and system settings to your Google Drive account.
  2. Remove active accounts. Navigate to Settings, then Passwords & accounts. Select your Google account and tap Remove account to prevent Factory Reset Protection (FRP) from locking the device for the next user.
  3. Locate the reset menu. Open Settings and navigate to System. Tap Reset options, then select Erase all data (factory reset).
  4. Initiate the wipe. Tap Erase all data at the bottom of the screen. Enter your device PIN, pattern, or password when prompted to authorize the action.
  5. Complete the process. Wait for the device to restart and display the Welcome screen. Power off the device immediately upon reaching the setup assistant to leave it in a clean state for the next user.
