How to Update Your Android Device Before Data Transfer
Ensure a seamless data migration by updating your Android device to the latest software version before initiating a transfer.
- Connect to a stable power source. Plug your Android device into a wall outlet. Software updates can be power-intensive, and a device that powers off during an update may become unstable or unusable.
- Establish a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Open the Settings app and tap Network & internet. Ensure Wi-Fi is toggled on and connected to a high-speed, unmetered network to avoid incomplete downloads.
- Locate system update settings. Open the Settings app. Scroll down and tap System, then select Software update. Depending on your manufacturer, this may be labeled as System update or About phone followed by Android version.
- Search for available updates. Tap Check for update. The system will ping the manufacturer servers to verify if a newer firmware version is available. If an update appears, tap Download and install.
- Install the system software. Allow the download to complete and tap Restart now to apply the update. Your phone will reboot, show a progress bar, and return to the lock screen once the installation is finished.
- Confirm the software version. Navigate back to Settings > System > Software update to confirm the status is current. You are now prepared to safely initiate your data migration to the new device.
