How to secure your Android device with a stronger screen lock

Upgrade your Android security by switching from swipe or pattern locks to a robust PIN, password, or biometric authentication method.

  1. Open security settings. Open the Settings app on your Android device. Scroll down and tap on Security & privacy.
  2. Access device unlock options. Tap on Device unlock within the Security & privacy menu. Select Screen lock to view your current configuration and available alternatives.
  3. Select a secure lock method. Select either PIN or Password from the list of options. Avoid Pattern or Swipe, as these are vulnerable to observation and physical residue tracking.
  4. Set your new credential. Enter a complex, unique sequence that does not correlate with birthdays or simple patterns. Confirm the new PIN or password by entering it a second time when prompted.
  5. Enable biometric authentication. Return to the Device unlock menu and select Fingerprint or Face Unlock if your hardware supports it. These serve as a secondary layer of convenience for daily use while maintaining your primary secure credential as a backup.
  6. Validate the change. Press the Power button to lock your device. Wake the screen and verify that your device requires your newly configured credential to unlock.
