How to Fix Android Not Charging

Follow these precise steps to diagnose and resolve charging issues on your Android device, from debris removal to software troubleshooting.

  1. Clean the charging port. Power off your device completely. Use a non-conductive toothpick to gently dislodge lint or debris from the USB-C port, then use short bursts of compressed air to clear remaining particles. Avoid using metal objects, as these can damage the delicate internal pins.
  2. Test alternative charging hardware. Isolate the failure by swapping your cable and power adapter with known working components. If the device charges with a different cable, the original cable has failed internally. If it still fails, test the adapter in a different wall outlet.
  3. Perform a forced restart. Software glitches can sometimes freeze the power management system. Hold the Power button and Volume Up button simultaneously for 15 to 30 seconds until the device restarts. This forces the system to reset its connection to the charging hardware.
  4. Verify battery status in settings. Navigate to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to determine if a specific application is drawing excessive power during charge attempts. High background usage can cause the device to discharge faster than it charges, creating the appearance of a faulty port.
  5. Check for system software updates. Navigate to Settings > System > Software Updates. Install any pending patches, as manufacturers frequently release firmware updates that resolve power management and USB-C handshake protocols. A system update may restore charging functionality interrupted by a software bug.
  6. Enter Safe Mode. Press and hold the Power button, then tap and hold the 'Restart' option on your screen until the 'Reboot to safe mode' prompt appears. Tap OK. If the device charges in Safe Mode, a third-party application is interfering with the charging controller.
