How to Fix an Android Microphone That Is Not Working

Resolve microphone issues on Android devices. Follow these steps to check hardware, permissions, and software settings for a quick fix.

  1. Inspect the microphone ports for debris. Locate the primary microphone pinhole, usually found at the bottom edge of the device near the charging port. Use a dry, soft-bristled brush or low-pressure compressed air to clear any lint, dust, or residue from the opening. Avoid inserting sharp metal objects, as this can permanently damage the internal diaphragm.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone. Review the list of applications and ensure that the app you are attempting to use has explicit access to the microphone. Toggle the switch to Allowed if it is set to Denied or Ask every time.
  3. Swipe down from the top of your screen to access the Quick Settings panel. Tap the Bluetooth icon to disable it completely, ensuring your phone is not routing audio to a nearby pair of wireless earbuds or a car head unit. Test the microphone again to confirm if the issue was related to an active Bluetooth connection.
  4. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds. Continue holding until the device screen goes black and the manufacturer logo reappears. This clears temporary system processes and audio drivers that may have hung during operation.
  5. Press and hold the Power button, then tap and hold the 'Restart' or 'Power off' option on the screen until the 'Reboot to safe mode' prompt appears. Tap OK. Once the device reboots in Safe Mode, test the microphone using the native Recorder app; if it functions correctly, a third-party application is causing the interference.
  6. Go to Settings > System > Software update. Tap Check for update and install any pending firmware patches. Manufacturers frequently push updates that resolve specific hardware-driver conflicts, including those affecting input sensors like the microphone.
