How to Use ControlNet for AI Art Generation

Master ControlNet to precisely control AI art generation. Learn to guide composition, poses, and structure in Stable Diffusion with step-by-step instructions.

  1. Install ControlNet extension for Automatic1111. Launch Automatic1111 WebUI and navigate to Extensions > Install from URL. Paste 'https://github.com/Mikubill/sd-webui-controlnet' into the URL field and click Install. Restart the WebUI completely after installation completes. The ControlNet interface will appear as an expandable section below the main generation panel.
  2. Select your ControlNet model type. Expand the ControlNet section and click the Model dropdown. Choose based on your control needs: Canny for edge detection, OpenPose for human poses, Depth for 3D structure, or Lineart for clean line control. Each model requires its corresponding preprocessor to analyze your reference image properly.
  3. Upload your reference image. Drag your reference image into the ControlNet input area or click to browse files. The image should clearly show the structure you want to control - strong edges for Canny, clear poses for OpenPose, or distinct depth layers for Depth models. Ensure your reference image matches your desired output dimensions.
  4. Configure the preprocessor settings. Select the matching preprocessor from the Preprocessor dropdown - typically the same name as your model. Adjust the preprocessor resolution to match your generation size. Enable 'Allow Preview' to see how ControlNet interprets your reference image before generation begins.
  5. Set control weight and guidance scale. Adjust the Control Weight slider between 0.5-1.5 to balance ControlNet influence versus your text prompt. Lower values give more creative freedom, higher values enforce stricter adherence to the reference structure. Set Guidance Start and End to control when during the generation process ControlNet applies its influence.
  6. Write your text prompt. Craft your text prompt in the main prompt field, describing the artistic style, colors, and details you want. ControlNet will use your reference image for structure while the prompt determines the artistic interpretation. Keep prompts focused on style and mood rather than composition details.
  7. Generate and refine your AI art. Click Generate to create your controlled AI artwork. Review the result and adjust Control Weight if the reference structure is too strong or too weak. Use the same seed with different prompts to maintain consistent composition while exploring various artistic styles.
