How to Create Consistent Characters in AI Art

Learn proven techniques to generate consistent character designs across multiple AI art generations using prompts, seeds, and reference images.

  1. Write a detailed character description template. Create a comprehensive character description including physical features, clothing, age, and distinctive characteristics. Write this as a reusable prompt template. Include specific details like 'shoulder-length brown hair with slight waves' rather than just 'brown hair'. Save this description in a text file for consistent copying.
  2. Generate your first reference image with a fixed seed. Use your character template to generate an initial image. Note the seed number that produces your best result. In most AI tools, you can find this in the image metadata or generation settings. Copy both the exact prompt and seed number to a document for reuse.
  3. Use the same seed for pose and scene variations. Keep your character description and seed identical while changing only the action, pose, or background elements in your prompt. Add scene descriptions after your character template, separated by commas. This maintains facial features and body type while allowing environmental changes.
  4. Enable image-to-image mode for stronger consistency. Upload your reference image to the AI tool's image-to-image or img2img feature. Set the influence strength between 0.3-0.7 to maintain character features while allowing scene changes. Use your original character prompt along with new scene descriptions for best results.
  5. Create a character model using training techniques. For advanced consistency, train a LoRA or DreamBooth model on 15-25 images of your character in different poses and lighting. Use tools like Automatic1111 with the Kohya trainer, or cloud services like RunPod. Name your character with a unique identifier in the training data.
  6. Apply negative prompts for unwanted variations. Use negative prompts to exclude common inconsistencies like 'different hair color, changed eye color, extra limbs, deformed features, different clothing style'. Add these to every generation to maintain your character's core appearance across different scenes and poses.
  7. Batch generate with consistent settings. Use the same generation parameters for all character images: identical sampling method, steps, CFG scale, and resolution. Create a settings template in your AI tool if available. Generate multiple variations at once using batch mode to maintain consistency across a series.
