How to Create AI Art Styles and Aesthetics

Learn to craft unique AI art styles using prompts, parameters, and style references. Master aesthetic control in Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion.

  1. Choose your base art movement or aesthetic. Select a foundational artistic style as your starting point. Use specific terms like 'Art Nouveau,' 'cyberpunk,' 'minimalist photography,' or 'Japanese woodblock print.' Add these directly to your prompts as style descriptors. Combine multiple movements for unique hybrids, such as 'Art Deco meets cyberpunk' or 'Impressionist digital art.'
  2. Define your color palette and mood. Specify exact color schemes using terms like 'monochromatic blue palette,' 'warm earth tones,' or 'neon synthwave colors.' Include lighting descriptions such as 'golden hour lighting,' 'harsh fluorescent,' or 'dramatic rim lighting.' Add mood descriptors like 'melancholic,' 'energetic,' or 'serene' to guide the emotional tone.
  3. Set technical parameters for consistency. Adjust aspect ratios, quality settings, and stylization parameters to maintain consistency. In Midjourney, use --ar 16:9 for cinematic looks or --ar 1:1 for social media. Set --stylize values between 100-1000, where lower values follow prompts more literally and higher values add more artistic interpretation. Use --chaos 0-25 to control variation levels.
  4. Create style reference images. Generate or collect 3-5 images that represent your desired aesthetic. Use these as style references in subsequent generations. In Midjourney, upload reference images and use --sref URL. In DALL-E 3, describe the reference image style in detail within your prompt. For Stable Diffusion, use LoRA models or textual inversions trained on your style references.
  5. Develop signature prompt formulas. Create reusable prompt templates that capture your aesthetic. Structure them as: [Subject] + [Style descriptors] + [Technical specifications] + [Mood/atmosphere]. For example: 'portrait of [subject], in the style of vintage film photography, shot on 35mm film, soft natural lighting, melancholic mood, muted color palette.' Save these formulas and modify only the subject for consistent results.
  6. Refine through iterative generation. Generate multiple variations of your concept, then use the best results as inspiration for the next iteration. Use partial prompts from successful generations as building blocks. In Midjourney, use the 'Vary (Strong)' and 'Vary (Subtle)' buttons to explore variations. Remix prompts by adding or removing specific style elements to fine-tune the aesthetic.
  7. Apply post-processing for polish. Enhance your AI-generated images using photo editing software to reinforce your aesthetic. Adjust color grading, contrast, and saturation to match your vision. Apply consistent filters, textures, or overlays across your series. Use tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, or GIMP to add finishing touches that the AI might have missed.
