How to Use Gemini in Google Sheets
Generate content, analyze data, and automate tasks in Google Sheets using Gemini AI. Step-by-step guide.
- Open Google Sheets and verify Gemini is available. Go to sheets.google.com and open an existing spreadsheet or create a new one. Look for the Gemini icon (the sparkle symbol) in the toolbar at the top right. If you don't see it, Gemini may not be enabled for your account. Gemini is available with Google One Premium, Google Workspace, or select trial periods.
- Click the Gemini icon to open the side panel. Click the sparkle icon in the top-right corner of your Sheets window. The Gemini panel opens on the right side of your screen. This panel is where you'll interact with Gemini for all operations—text generation, formula creation, data analysis, and more.
- Generate content using Gemini prompts. Type a request in the Gemini text box at the bottom of the side panel. Examples: 'Generate 10 product names for a tech startup' or 'Create a list of quarterly sales targets.' Be specific about what you want—include context like column names or data ranges if relevant. Press Enter or click Send. Gemini will generate content in the panel.
- Ask Gemini to generate formulas. Request formulas by describing what you want to calculate. Example: 'Create a formula that calculates the average of column B if the value in column A is greater than 100.' Gemini generates the formula in the panel. Copy the formula and paste it into your target cell, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) after copying.
- Analyze data by asking Gemini questions. Select a range of data in your sheet. Open the Gemini panel and ask questions about the selection. Example: 'What are the top three trends in this data?' or 'Summarize this dataset.' Gemini analyzes the selected range and provides insights in the panel.
- Refine Gemini responses with follow-up prompts. Ask follow-up questions in the Gemini panel to adjust results. Example: 'Make that more concise' or 'Change the tone to professional.' Gemini maintains context from your conversation, so it understands previous requests. Continue refining until you have exactly what you need.
- Insert generated content directly into your sheet. For certain types of requests, Gemini offers an 'Insert' button in the panel. Click it to place the content directly into your sheet at the selected location. If no Insert button appears, manually copy the content from the panel and paste it into your desired cells using Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac).
