How to Use Claude for Document Analysis

Learn to analyze documents with Claude AI. Upload files, ask targeted questions, and extract insights from PDFs, text files, and images efficiently.

1. Upload your document to Claude. Click the attachment icon (paperclip) in the chat interface. Select your file from your device. Claude supports PDF, TXT, CSV, DOCX, images (PNG, JPEG), and code files up to 25MB. Wait for the upload confirmation before proceeding.
2. Frame your analysis request clearly. Ask specific questions rather than generic ones. Instead of "What's in this document," ask "What are the three main financial risks mentioned in section 4" or "Extract all email addresses and phone numbers from this contract." Be explicit about the format you want for the response.
3. Request comparative analysis across sections. Ask Claude to compare different parts of your document. Use prompts like "Compare the budget figures in Q1 vs Q4" or "What are the differences between the terms in sections 2.1 and 2.3." Claude can cross-reference information throughout the entire document.
4. Extract and transform data into usable formats. Request specific data extraction formats. Ask Claude to "convert this pricing table into CSV format" or "extract all dates and create a timeline." Claude can reformat information into spreadsheets, lists, or structured data you can copy directly into other applications.
5. Analyze document quality and completeness. Ask Claude to review your document for missing information, inconsistencies, or errors. Use prompts like "What information is missing from this proposal" or "Check for any contradictory statements." Claude can spot issues humans might miss during manual review.
6. Generate summaries and action items. Request executive summaries, key takeaways, or action item lists. Ask Claude to "create a 2-paragraph executive summary" or "list all action items with responsible parties and deadlines." Specify the audience level for appropriate language and detail.
