How to Use ChatGPT Voice Mode

Enable and use voice conversations with ChatGPT. Speak naturally, listen to responses, and control the conversation with your voice.

  1. Enable microphone permissions for ChatGPT. Before using voice mode, ChatGPT needs permission to access your device's microphone. On iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and toggle ChatGPT on. On Android, open Settings > Apps > ChatGPT > Permissions > Microphone and enable it. On web, your browser will prompt for microphone access when you first tap the voice button.
  2. Open a new chat and locate the voice button. Launch the ChatGPT app or open chatgpt.com in your browser. Start a new conversation or open an existing chat. On mobile, the voice button appears as a waveform icon at the bottom of the screen next to the text input field. On web, the microphone icon appears in the same location. Tap or click it once.
  3. Hold and speak your message. Press and hold the waveform button on mobile while you speak naturally. On web, click the microphone button, which will turn red to indicate recording is active. Speak clearly at a normal pace. You can use conversational language, ask follow-up questions, or give detailed instructions. Release the button on mobile or wait for the web interface to automatically detect when you've finished speaking (typically 1-2 seconds of silence).
  4. Listen to the voice response. ChatGPT will respond with spoken audio automatically. The response plays through your device's speaker or connected audio. You can pause the audio by tapping the pause icon that appears next to the response, or let it play fully. The text version of the response also appears on screen simultaneously so you can read along or refer back to it.
  5. Control voice settings and preferences. Open ChatGPT's settings by tapping your profile icon (bottom left on mobile, top right on web). Scroll to Voice and Audio Preferences. Choose your preferred voice from the available options (five distinct voices are provided). Toggle Always Speak Replies on or off to determine whether every response uses voice or only selected ones. Return to your chat and voice mode will use your new preferences immediately.
  6. Continue the conversation or stop voice mode. After each response, tap the voice button again to ask a follow-up question using voice. The conversation continues naturally, with your voice inputs and ChatGPT's voice responses. To exit voice mode, tap the microphone button once (on web) or switch to text input by tapping the keyboard icon (on mobile). Voice mode remains active for your entire session unless you manually disable it.
  7. Fix audio or microphone issues. If ChatGPT doesn't hear you, check that microphone permissions are enabled in device settings and that you're speaking clearly during the recording window. If you can't hear the response, ensure your device volume is up and speakers aren't muted. Try disconnecting and reconnecting Bluetooth audio if using wireless headphones. If the voice button is gray or unresponsive, restart the app or refresh the web page and try again.
