How to Use ChatGPT's Memory Feature
Learn to enable and manage ChatGPT's memory feature to create personalized conversations that remember your preferences and context.
- Access your ChatGPT settings. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of the ChatGPT interface. Select Settings from the dropdown menu. Navigate to the Personalization tab in the left sidebar.
- Enable the memory feature. Locate the Memory section within Personalization settings. Toggle the Memory switch to the ON position. ChatGPT will now begin remembering relevant information from your conversations automatically.
- Tell ChatGPT what to remember. Start a conversation and explicitly mention important details you want remembered. Say things like "Remember that I'm a Python developer working on web applications" or "I prefer concise explanations without technical jargon." ChatGPT will store these preferences automatically.
- Review stored memories. Return to Settings > Personalization > Memory and click "Manage" next to the Memory toggle. This opens a list of everything ChatGPT has remembered about you. Review each memory to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Edit or delete specific memories. In the memory management panel, click the X next to any memory you want to remove. To modify a memory, delete the old one and tell ChatGPT the updated information in a new conversation. ChatGPT will automatically store the new details.
- Use temporary chats when needed. Click the ChatGPT logo in the top-left corner and select "Temporary chat" when you want to have a conversation without affecting your memory. This is useful for one-off questions or sensitive topics you don't want remembered.
- Clear all memories if needed. In Settings > Personalization > Memory, click "Clear ChatGPT's memory" at the bottom of the memory management panel. Confirm the action when prompted. This permanently deletes all stored memories and cannot be undone.
