How to Export ChatGPT Conversations

Export your ChatGPT chat history in seconds. Download all conversations as a ZIP file containing JSON data for backup or analysis purposes.

1. Open ChatGPT settings. Navigate to chat.openai.com and log into your account. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner, then select Settings from the menu that appears.
2. Navigate to data controls. In the settings panel, click Data controls from the left sidebar. This section contains all options for managing your personal data and conversation history.
3. Request data export. Find the Export data section and click the Export button. ChatGPT will display a confirmation dialog explaining what data will be included in your export package.
4. Confirm the export request. Click Confirm export in the dialog box. ChatGPT will begin processing your request and display a message indicating that preparation has started.
5. Wait for email notification. Check your email inbox for a download link from OpenAI. Export processing typically takes 5-15 minutes, but can take up to 30 days for accounts with extensive conversation histories.
6. Download your data. Click the download link in the email to download a ZIP file containing your ChatGPT data. The file includes JSON files with your conversations organized by date and conversation ID.
