How to Create Custom GPTs in ChatGPT

Learn to build custom GPTs in ChatGPT Plus with step-by-step instructions for configuration, knowledge uploads, and publishing your AI assistant.

  1. Access the GPT Builder. Navigate to chat.openai.com and ensure you're signed in to a ChatGPT Plus account. Click your profile picture in the bottom-left corner, then select 'My GPTs' from the menu. Click the 'Create a GPT' button to launch the GPT Builder interface.
  2. Define your GPT's purpose and personality. In the Create tab, describe what you want your GPT to do in plain language. The GPT Builder will automatically generate a name, description, and initial instructions. Be specific about the tasks, tone, and expertise level you want. For example: 'Create a fitness coach that provides beginner-friendly workout plans and nutrition advice.'
  3. Customize the configuration settings. Switch to the Configure tab to fine-tune your GPT. Edit the name, description, and instructions manually. The instructions field is where you define behavior, response style, and specific guidelines. Write detailed instructions about how the GPT should respond, what information to prioritize, and any limitations or special behaviors.
  4. Upload knowledge files. In the Knowledge section, upload files that contain information your GPT should reference. Supported formats include PDF, TXT, DOCX, and others. These files become part of your GPT's knowledge base and will be searched when generating responses. Upload company documents, research papers, or specialized guides relevant to your GPT's purpose.
  5. Configure capabilities and tools. Enable or disable specific capabilities in the Capabilities section. Web Browsing allows real-time internet searches, DALL-E enables image generation, and Code Interpreter provides data analysis and coding assistance. Only enable features that serve your GPT's specific purpose to avoid confusion and maintain focus.
  6. Test your GPT thoroughly. Use the preview panel on the right side to test your GPT with various questions and scenarios. Ask edge cases, check if it follows your instructions correctly, and verify it references uploaded knowledge appropriately. Iterate on your configuration based on the responses you receive during testing.
7. Set privacy and sharing options. Choose your GPT's visibility level before saving. Select 'Only me' for private use, 'Anyone with the link' for selective sharing, or 'Public' to list it in the GPT Store. Consider your content's sensitivity and intended audience when making this decision. Click 'Create' to finalize your custom GPT.
