Move Old Chats Into a New ChatGPT Project

Transfer existing conversations into a ChatGPT project to organize and manage related chats in one space.

  1. Create a new project. Open ChatGPT and look for the Projects section in the left sidebar. Click the plus icon or "Create new project" button. Give your project a name that reflects the conversations you plan to move into it, then confirm. You now have an empty project ready to receive chats.
  2. Find the chats you want to move. Go to the Chats section in the left sidebar and review your conversation history. Identify which chats belong in your new project. You can browse by date or use the search bar to filter conversations by keywords if you have many chats to sort through.
  3. Select the first chat to move. Click on one of the chats you want to add to the project to open it. Once the conversation loads, look for the menu options at the top or right side of the chat window. You should see a three-dot menu icon or an option to manage the chat settings.
  4. Move the chat to your project. Click the menu icon and select "Move to project" or "Add to project" from the dropdown options. A list of your available projects will appear. Select the project you created in step one. The chat will now be associated with that project.
  5. Move additional chats to the project. Return to your chat list and repeat steps three and four for each remaining conversation you want to add to the project. Open each chat, access the menu, and select your project. The process is identical for every chat you transfer.
  6. Confirm chats appear in the project. Navigate to your Projects section and click on the project you created. You should see all the chats you moved listed under that project. Each conversation will retain its original content and history—only the organization has changed.
  7. Add project context and continue working. While still in your project, look for options to add project details, instructions, or context that applies to all chats within it. Some versions allow you to set guidelines or background information that ChatGPT can reference across all conversations in that project. Save your project settings when complete.
