How to Fix Microsoft Edge Not Opening

Microsoft Edge may fail to launch due to corrupted user data, conflicting processes, or system file issues. These steps resolve the most common startup problems and restore normal browser function.

  1. Close all Edge processes in Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Look for any Microsoft Edge processes in the Processes tab. Right-click each Edge process and select End task. Check both the main processes and any background processes.
  2. Restart Edge with a clean profile. Press Windows+R, type msedge --no-sandbox --disable-extensions, and press Enter. This launches Edge with a temporary clean profile. If Edge opens successfully, the issue is likely related to your user profile or extensions.
  3. Clear Edge user data. Press Windows+R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data, and press Enter. Close Edge completely, then rename the Default folder to Default.old. Restart Edge to create a fresh profile with default settings.
  4. Reset Edge to factory settings. Open Windows Settings with Windows+I. Navigate to Apps > Installed apps. Find Microsoft Edge, click the three dots, and select Advanced options. Click Reset to restore Edge to its original installation state.
  5. Repair Edge installation. Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps. Locate Microsoft Edge, click the three dots, and select Advanced options. Click Repair to fix corrupted installation files without losing your data.
  6. Update Windows and Edge. Press Windows+I to open Settings. Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install any available system updates. Open Edge (if working) and navigate to edge://settings/help to check for browser updates.
  7. Run Windows troubleshooter. Press Windows+I and navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Store Apps and click Run. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix app-related issues that may prevent Edge from launching.
