How to Delete ChatGPT Conversation History
ChatGPT stores your conversation history by default, but you can delete individual conversations or clear your entire chat history. Deleting conversations removes them permanently from your account and cannot be undone.
- Open ChatGPT in your web browser. Navigate to chat.openai.com and sign in to your account. Your conversation history appears in the left sidebar. If the sidebar is not visible, click the hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner.
- Locate the conversation you want to delete. Scroll through your conversation list in the left sidebar. Conversations are organized chronologically with the most recent at the top. Each conversation displays a brief preview of the first message.
- Delete a single conversation. Hover over the conversation title and click the three-dot menu that appears. Select Delete from the dropdown menu. Confirm the deletion by clicking Delete again in the popup dialog.
- Clear all conversation history at once. Click your profile picture in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar. Select Settings from the menu. Navigate to Data Controls and click Clear all conversations. Type DELETE in the confirmation field and click Delete all conversations.
- Delete conversations on mobile app. Open the ChatGPT mobile app and tap the conversation list icon. Long-press the conversation you want to delete, then tap Delete from the menu. For bulk deletion, tap Settings > Data Controls > Clear all conversations.
- Verify deletion completed. Return to your main chat interface. Deleted individual conversations will no longer appear in your sidebar. If you cleared all conversations, your sidebar will be empty except for the option to start a new chat.
