How to reposition the Mac Dock to the side of your screen

Learn how to move your Mac Dock to the left or right side of your display using System Settings to optimize your workspace and increase vertical screen real estate.

  1. Open the System Settings application. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu to open your preference panel.
  2. Access Dock preferences. Locate the sidebar on the left side of the System Settings window. Click on the Desktop & Dock tab to reveal all configuration options for your interface.
  3. Set the screen position. Scroll down the right-hand panel until you reach the Position on screen section. Select either Left or Right based on your preference; the Dock will move instantly.
  4. Adjust size and magnification. Use the Size slider to increase or decrease the icon footprint. If the Dock feels too crowded on the side, enable the Magnification toggle to increase icon size upon hover.
