How to set up Touch ID on Mac

Secure your Mac using Touch ID. Learn how to register your fingerprint and configure biometric authentication for system unlocking and purchases.

1. Open Touch ID settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings. Navigate to Touch ID & Password in the sidebar to access biometric configuration.
2. Add a new fingerprint. Select Add Fingerprint located under the Touch ID section. Enter your Mac user password when prompted to authorize the configuration process.
3. Scan your fingerprint. Place your finger on the Touch ID sensor located at the top-right corner of the keyboard. Lift and rest your finger repeatedly, following the on-screen prompts until the graphic displays a complete fingerprint registration.
4. Select authentication features. Toggle the switches for Unlocking your Mac, Apple Pay, and iTunes & App Store to enable Touch ID for these specific actions. Enabling these features links your fingerprint to your local keychain and Apple account.
5. Finalize and test. Click Done to save your settings. Lock your Mac by pressing Command + Control + Q and attempt to unlock it using the registered finger to confirm the sensor is functioning correctly.
