How to Force Restart an iPhone

Learn the precise button sequence to force restart any modern iPhone model when the screen is unresponsive or the device is frozen.

  1. Press the Volume Up button. Locate the Volume Up button on the left edge of your iPhone. Press and immediately release the button.
  2. Press the Volume Down button. Immediately following the first step, press and release the Volume Down button on the same side of the device.
  3. Hold the Side button. Press and hold the Side button on the right edge of the iPhone. Do not release the button when the power-off slider appears on the screen.
  4. Release for the Apple logo. Continue holding the Side button until the Apple logo appears in the center of the display. Once the logo is visible, release the button immediately.
  5. Allow the system to boot. The iPhone will proceed through the standard startup sequence. Wait for the Lock Screen to appear before attempting to unlock or interact with the device.
